The school is based in the CBD of Auckland city, which is the largest city of New Zealand. The city is multi-cultural with a variety of ethnic groups and cultural events. This provides amazing opportunities for you to get involved with the community and spend time with like-minded people enjoying familiar experiences.

The school itself is conveniently nestled in Auckland CBD surrounded by shops, restaurants, cafes, and libraries, all handy to public transport like the city bus, Uber and even electric scooters. The pristine waterfront is just around the corner - a popular spot to have lunch with your classmates or if you want to venture further, you could go for a swim or a surf in the crystal clear water in the summer!

The school is small, boutique and welcoming with an environment where you'll instantly feel comfortable. We don't have big lecture halls you can lost in, our classrooms are intimate and inclusive. Producing successful and employable graduates is at the core of our philosophy. Your employability and confidence will improve from focused technical and theoretical training, and by the building of your soft skills throughout the course.

New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 3) (Healthcare Assistance) is an entry-level, NZQA approved qualification which trains Health Care Assistants in general aged health care issues, professional practices, skills, knowledge and procedures. This training enables graduates to deliver the highest standard of care and support in a health and wellbeing organisation, including home care and other aged-care environments. At the successful completion of New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 3) (Healthcare Assistance) students will be awarded the following qualification, the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 3) with the strand in Healthcare Assistance.

Work Visa holders

As per above, PLUS

  • Be employed as a health care assistant in a New Zealand care facility or care organisation for the duration of the programme enrolment.

  • Have supporting documentation: academic or healthcare sector qualifications and endorsement of enrolment from your employer.

Working while studying

You can work part-time, up to 20 hours per week, and full-time during scheduled holidays while on a student visa.

  • Immigration New Zealand has full details of requirements that international students must meet to be able to work while studying.

  • The Employment New Zealand website provides information for working in New Zealand and employment rights.

  • Anyone currently being forced to work in New Zealand illegally for less than the minimum wage and/or excessive hours is advised to call the Labour Inspectorate on 0800 20 90 20. You can also contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

International Students and Visas

As an international student, you are required by law to hold a valid visa and comply with your visa conditions for the duration of your study at the NZ School of Vocational Education and Training. It is your primary responsibility to maintain the lawful status to study and live in New Zealand.

To formally be enrolled, all students are required to upload a copy of a valid student visa to study at the NZ School of Vocational Education and Training, New Zealand. If you do not hold a valid student visa or fail to provide one, your student enrolment may be cancelled.

Applying for a Student Visa

International students must supply a study permit or visa as evidence of their right to study in New Zealand. The international applicant is responsible for complying with all conditions relating to the study visa or permit. You must apply directly to Immigration New Zealand for a STUDENT VISA or call Immigration NZ on +64 9 914 4100

It is important to apply for your student visa as soon as possible, as in some cases the application process may take a minimum of one month.

Attendance requirement

International students must have 100% attendance in all their scheduled classes unless there is a genuine and valid reason otherwise. Please get in touch with our Student Service and Supports Manager if you are unsure about what is deemed a valid reason. Failure to attend without a doctor's certificate or valid reason may result in the termination of your enrolment as outlined by Immigration New Zealand. International students are required to attend all lectures, tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, assessments and examinations required by the course in which they are enrolled to retain their right to study in New Zealand under a student visa. Failure to meet this requirement may result in the student’s enrolment with the New Zealand School of Healthcare being terminated and notification sent to Immigration New Zealand (INZ).

Any international student who is identified as at risk due to low attendance and/or attainment shall be supported as procedures and guidelines documented in the New Zealand School of Healthcare Quality Management Manual available on request.

Variation of conditions

You may be able to apply for a variation of conditions if you already hold a student visa, a work visa, or a visitor visa. Your application will only be granted if the new conditions would meet the immigration instructions your original visa was issued under.

Student visa holders

You may be able to apply for a variation of conditions to allow you to change the course you are studying and/or the education provider you are studying with, or to allow you to work part-time and/or full-time during your holidays. If you withdraw from your course of study and/or education provider before varying the conditions of your visa, you will be in breach of your visa conditions.

Now that you have your visa you can apply as an international student, please follow the steps below.

1. Apply for a place

  • Please check you meet the academic and English language entry requirements listed under the country information page.

  • Complete your application online and provide supporting documents.

  • Download the application form to apply, please print in clear, legible English. Apply Now

Required documents

  • Certified/notarised copy of personal details page from passport, or birth certificate.

  • Original or certified photocopies of all previous transcripts and/or certificates (showing you meet the entry requirements).

  • Certified/notarised translations of original documents are required when these are not in English.

  • Notarised copy means a public notary has seen the original and a copy and has stamped and signed the copy to say that it is the same as the original document. If you are in Tauranga, you may bring the original document to the admissions staff to be sighted.

2. Wait for confirmation

We will acknowledge your application and start the interview process. We will require you to interview either in person if you are in Auckland or via phone or over Zoom. We will provide you with a time, date and a Zoom link.

If you meet the entrance criteria you will receive an offer of place, which includes an invoice and instructions on how to pay the tuition fees. If some documents are missing, a conditional offer of place may be given.

3. Pay your tuition fees

Pay your fees after you receive your offer of place letter. A receipt will be provided when the funds have been received by NZSVET. In some cases, tuition fees should be paid after obtaining an Approval in Principle (AIP) for your student visa.

Tuition fees and resource costs include:

  • All tuition fees for classes.

  • All lecture materials.

  • Internet, photocopying and printing.

  • Processing, recording and reporting of assessment results and personal data.

Expenses not included in your programme fees:

  • Textbooks.

  • General stationery items.

  • Computer equipment including personal computers and/or tablets.

  • Accommodation and meals.

  • Medical and travel insurance.

  • Travel expenses.

Fee protection

NZSVET complies with the Education and Training Act 2020. For your financial security, the fees will be placed in a trust fund as required by NZQA rules for tertiary providers. The trust fund used by NZSVET is the Public Trust. This is to ensure that your funds are secure in the unlikely event of insolvency, regulatory closure or withdrawal of accreditation from NZSVET.

Any student fees greater than $500 NZD must be directly deposited into the NZSVET Public Trust account. All agents must ensure that student fees (including tuition fees, resource fees, insurance etc.) are deposited into the NZSVET student public trust accounts on receipt within 48 hours. No agent shall accept any fees from the student on behalf of NZSVET.

All students are required to have appropriate medical and travel Insurance as specified in The Education (Pastoral Care of tertiary and International learners) Code of Practice 2021.  All policies will be verified prior to the student’s enrolment. The policies available in New Zealand that meet New Zealand School of Healthcare requirements are:

If you need help from the police, the fire service, or you need an ambulance dial 111 and the emergency operator will connect you to the right service.

You should call 111 if:

• Someone’s in danger.

• Someone’s having chest pain, breathing difficulties or is seriously ill or injured.

• There’s a fire or serious risk to property.

• A crime is being committed and the offenders are still there or have just left.

• You’ve come across a major public inconvenience, like trees blocking the road.

Before you arrive, there are a few essentials that you need to know. This guide to New Zealand is packed full of information to make your journey easier and more enjoyable.

Most international students will experience some difficulties adjusting to a new country and culture. Feeling homesick and out of place is totally normal and should be expected. Everyone experiences culture shock differently, listed below are some common signs and symptoms of culture shock:

  • Feeling homesick, sad, frustrated, depressed angry or/and lonely.

  • Feeling worried about your health.

  • Headaches and pains.

  • Insomnia or sleeping too much.

  • Feeling overwhelmed by small problems.

  • Feeling shy and insecure.

Remember to be kind to yourself and don’t expect too much too soon. Listed below are some useful suggestions to help cope with culture shock:

  • Stay in touch with friends or other people you trust.

  • Exercise, get plenty of sleep and eat healthy food.

  • Use English as often as possible, if it’s your second language – confidence with English will help you adjust more quickly.

  • Learn as much as you can about New Zealand culture, values and attitudes, and try to respect them.

  • Be open to learning new things and spend time doing things you enjoy.

  • Keep your sense of humour.

Orientation

Before you being your studies we will welcome you with an orientation. The orientation is compulsory for international students to attend. It is your introduction to studying at NZSVET, and you will learn about life in the region, meet friends and get information that will help you settle into your time here with us in New Zealand.

At the orientation, you will be provided with a hard copy of the student handbook that outlines the Code of Conduct for our students, including potential disciplinary action and procedures that may be taken if a student breaches this Code of Conduct.

At international student orientation and again at information sessions, you shall be informed of our 24/7 emergency contact, policies and support services available, as per the requirements of the The Education (Pastoral Care of tertiary and International learners) Code of Practice 2021

We are committed to reporting and addressing any health and safety issues for our students as outlined in our quality manual and student handbook.

You need to be aware that accessing support services such as counselling will not have an impact on your academic results. However, certain information disclosed in a health or counselling appointment (such as the intent to harm oneself or others) will result in information being shared with appropriate third parties so that necessary steps can be taken to protect you and any other affected parties.
