Advice for Students with a Disability or Impairment

If you have a disability or impairment, planning ahead can make a big difference in your learning experience. At the New Zealand School of Vocational Education and Training (NZSVET), we’re here to support you every step of the way. Here are some important tips to help you get started:

l Learn About Your Programme
Gather as much information as you can about your chosen course or programme—its structure, workload, assessments, and practical components.

l Contact Us Early
Get in touch with our Student Support Services before you enrol. Booking an early appointment allows us to discuss your needs and organise appropriate support in advance.

l Bring Documentation
When you meet with us, please provide relevant evidence of your disability or impairment. This helps us understand your situation and tailor support to suit you.

l Explore Available Support Options
Learn what services and adjustments are available to you. These may include assistive technologies, exam accommodations, note-taking support, and more.

l Communicate Openly About Your Needs
Let us know what types of resources, formats, or arrangements might help you—such as alternative print materials, quiet exam rooms, or mobility access.

l Talk to Current Students (If You Can)
If possible, speak with students currently enrolled in your programme to learn about their experiences with the coursework, time management, and any challenges.

l Be Proactive in Problem-Solving
Take the initiative to address any issues as they arise. Our Disability Support team is here to help you navigate challenges, but your involvement is key.

l Get Comfortable with Technology Early
If you need specific software or equipment, try to access it before your programme begins. Being familiar with tools like text-to-speech software or digital recorders will help you feel more confident from day one.

l Know Your Rights
It’s important to understand your rights under the Human Rights Act 1993 (Human Rights Act 1993 No 82 (as at 01 July 2024), Public Act Contents – New Zealand Legislation). If you need support interpreting this, our team is happy to help.

l Take Ownership of Your Success
While we’re here to support you, your success will ultimately depend on your effort, engagement, and willingness to reach out when you need help.
